Zurich on a Monday: What’s Open, What’s Closed and How to Plan a Full Day Anyway

Zurich Zoo is open 365 days a year; four of the city’s headline museums are not. Kunsthaus Zürich, the Swiss National Museum, Museum Rietberg and the FIFA Museum all list Monday as closed. Zurich museums closed Monday is therefore a useful rule of thumb, but not the end of the day: Zurich’s museum association lists 19 museums and cultural sites that do open on Mondays.

The practical fix is geographic. Keep the morning around Zürich HB, the Old Town and the lakefront, then choose one longer afternoon anchor: Zoo Zürich, Uetliberg if the weather is clear, or Zurich West if you would rather shop and eat than chase another museum.

What Actually Closes in Zurich on a Monday — and What Doesn’t

Monday closure is common enough that you should verify the institution before crossing the city. The official Verein Zürcher Museen currently names 19 museums and cultural sites that welcome visitors on Mondays, while several of the names first-time visitors search for are absent from that list.

Kunsthaus Zürich lists the museum as closed Mondays while the Garden of Art remains open daily. The Swiss National Museum, Museum Rietberg and FIFA Museum also explicitly list Monday closures. Pavillon Le Corbusier runs its 2026 season from April 17 through November 29, Tuesday through Sunday, and remains closed on Monday.

The 19-Museum List Nobody Sends You

The Verein Zürcher Museen list includes the Beyer Clock and Watch Museum, Botanical Garden, focusTerra, Swiss Finance Museum, Zürich Tram Museum, Zoo Zürich, the Succulent Plant Collection and the Old Town churches, among others. Some entries operate only while exhibitions are running, so being on the list does not mean you can arrive at any hour without checking.

This is where the famous-name test fails. Kunsthaus, Landesmuseum, Rietberg and FIFA Museum are not among those 19 Monday-open options. If one is a priority, move it to another day rather than trying to build Monday around it.

The Walkable Chain: Zürich HB, Altstadt and the Lakefront

Start at Zürich HB because the station creates an easy geographic starting point. Continue through the center toward Lindenhof and the Limmat, cross through the Old Town church cluster, use Heimplatz only if the Kunsthaus garden interests you, and end at Bürkliplatz.

Lindenhof, the Old Town and the Two Churches

The Old Town does not inherit the museum closure rule. The Zurich museum association includes the Altstadtkirchen among the cultural places available on Mondays, making the Grossmünster/Fraumünster area a much safer central choice than assuming every indoor attraction is shut.

Keep the route compact: station to Lindenhof, down toward the Limmat, through the church area and then south toward the lake. The benefit is not the number of landmarks collected. It is keeping most of the afternoon free for one substantial choice.

The Kunsthaus Garden You Can Enter With the Museum Shut

Kunsthaus has a particularly useful Monday exception. The galleries are closed, but the Garden of Art at the Chipperfield building is open Monday through Sunday from 6:00 a.m. to 9:30 p.m. Kunsthaus Zürich confirms these current hours.

Do not travel to Heimplatz expecting a substitute for the museum itself. Treat the garden as a short addition if your central route already takes you nearby. The closed museum beside an open Kunsthaus space is exactly the sort of distinction that a generic list of Monday closures misses.

Bürkliplatz, the Quays and the Boat Question

Bürkliplatz makes sense as the end of the central route because it is both lakefront and a departure point for ZSG services.

The official 2026 ZSG timetable marks the Mini Lake Cruise from Bürkliplatz as a daily service, which includes Monday. ZSG reserves the right to make timetable and vessel changes, so confirm the online timetable for your exact date.

Treat a boat as a scheduled addition, not a permanent attraction that happens whenever you reach the water.

Off-Center Anchors and Monday Exceptions

Want one place that can absorb the afternoon? Choose it before leaving the central cluster. A Monday becomes inefficient when every closed museum generates another cross-city backup plan.

Zoo Zürich and the Zürichberg

Zoo Zürich is the cleanest long-block option because it is open 365 days a year. The zoo’s official opening-hours page lists March–October hours of 9:00 a.m.–6:00 p.m., with a 5:00 p.m. closing time from November through February.

Allow roughly three to four hours as a TripFinch planning block rather than an official required visit time. The zoo is far enough from the center that it works better as the afternoon itself than as something squeezed between two other areas.

Uetliberg When the Sky Cooperates

Uetliberg is a better choice when visibility is good, but 2026 has an important transport exception.

SZU says the S10 section between Zürich HB and Zürich Selnau is closed from April 29 through October 18, 2026 while the underground station at Zürich HB is rebuilt. Travelers need to reach Selnau or use another published alternative route, and SZU advises allowing extra time. See the official S10 passenger information.

That makes the standard advice to simply “take the S10 from Zürich HB” wrong for much of the 2026 visitor season. Check the current journey planner on your travel date.

Zurich West and the Viadukt Arches

Zurich West works when your objective is shopping, food and an urban neighborhood rather than another formal museum.

Monday is normally a regular shopping day. Zurich Tourism says most stores operate Monday through Friday, commonly between about 9:00 a.m. and 8:00 p.m., though smaller outlets may close earlier.

The advantage here is flexibility: there is no single museum admission window around which the rest of the day must revolve.

Monday Questions the Opening-Hours Pages Don’t Answer

Are shops open in Zurich on a Monday?

Is the Kunsthaus completely closed on Mondays?

The museum galleries are closed. The Garden of Art at the Chipperfield building is not: Kunsthaus Zürich currently lists it as open daily from 6:00 a.m. to 9:30 p.m.

Does the Zürich Card still pay off on a Monday?

Not automatically.

The Zürich Card currently costs CHF 29 for 24 hours or CHF 56 for 72 hours for adults. It includes public transportation in the covered region plus museum and other benefits. See the official Zürich Card questions and answers.

Because several headline museums are closed Mondays, calculate the card from the transport and attractions you will actually use. A museum benefit has no value that day if the museum behind it is shut.

Do Lake Zurich boats and the Uetliberg train run on Mondays?

ZSG publishes daily lake services in its seasonal 2026 timetable. Uetliberg remains reachable, but during the April 29–October 18 S10 construction period the normal Zürich HB–Selnau rail segment is suspended, so use the current SZU/ZVV routing rather than an old itinerary.

Two Monday Dates That Need Extra Checks

Zurich has two local Monday half-holidays that require institution-by-institution checks.

City of Zurich guidance identifies the afternoons of Sechseläuten and Knabenschiessen as additional local half-holidays. The city’s 2026 notices place Sechseläuten on Monday, April 20 and Knabenschiessen on Monday, September 14.

These dates do not create one reliable citywide closure rule. The FIFA Museum’s official 2026 schedule explicitly lists both dates as closed, so recheck every institution you plan to use rather than extending an ordinary-Monday assumption to a local half-holiday.

When Monday Stops Being the Easy Day

For an ordinary Monday, the workaround is straightforward: accept that several famous museums are unavailable, keep the center to the Zürich HB–Old Town–lakefront chain, then give the afternoon to one deliberate anchor such as Zoo Zürich, Uetliberg or Zurich West.

The recommendation flips on Sechseläuten or Knabenschiessen. If your only Zurich day is April 20 or September 14, 2026, do not reuse a normal-Monday plan. Recheck every institution you care about and move a priority museum to a different date if the itinerary allows it.
