If you are still deciding where to stay in Interlaken, the biggest difference between West and Ost is not the town center. It is what happens after you leave Interlaken.
Interlaken Ost: Jungfrau Region, Lake Brienz and Lucerne
Interlaken Ost is the key rail node for the Jungfrau Region. The Bernese Oberland Railway starts there, with coupled trains running toward Zweilütschinen before the service separates: one branch continues to Lauterbrunnen and the other to Grindelwald.
That makes Ost the practical starting point for itineraries built around those valleys. Jungfraujoch is not a direct train ride from Interlaken Ost, but common rail approaches toward the high-mountain network begin through the Grindelwald or Lauterbrunnen side of the BOB system.
Ost also matters beyond mountain days. The Lake Brienz landing stage is close to Interlaken Ost station, and the Luzern–Interlaken Express runs between Lucerne and Interlaken Ost.
When those movements make up most of your non-local days, staying near Ost reduces the number of times you need to reposition before the main journey begins.
Interlaken West: Lake Thun and the Western Excursion Axis
Interlaken West has a different advantage. BLS places the Interlaken West port directly beside the railway station for Lake Thun services. If a Lake Thun boat day is one of the fixed parts of your trip, West starts to carry more weight.
That does not make West a poor base for the Jungfrau Region. You can still travel across Interlaken and continue toward the mountain network. The trade-off is repetition: if most of your big excursion days require Ost, the cross-town movement becomes part of several mornings rather than one isolated connection.
West therefore makes more sense when your itinerary is mixed rather than mountain-heavy, or when its western-side connections align better with the days you have actually planned.
When a Short Stay Favors West or Unterseen
A short stay changes the calculation because you have fewer repeated departures to optimize.
If your trip contains only one major day that depends on Ost, there is less reason to treat that station as the only sensible place to sleep. West can be a strong alternative when Lake Thun, a western-side arrival or departure, and local time in Interlaken carry similar weight.
Unterseen belongs in the same comparison. It is a separate municipality, but it meets Interlaken on the western side of the built-up area. For accommodation there, first ask how the exact address relates to Interlaken West, then ask how often you will still need to reach Ost.
The address matters more than the label. A property in Unterseen close to your useful transport may fit your trip better than a nominally “Interlaken” property that sends you in the opposite direction each morning.

The more days you plan toward Lauterbrunnen, Grindelwald and the connected Jungfrau network, the stronger the case for Ost becomes.
This is a frequency argument, not a claim that Ost is universally better. Each BOB-based day gives the station another role in your itinerary. When those departures dominate the trip, reducing the repeated positioning before them has more value than optimizing for one Lake Thun departure or one western-side connection.

Unterseen and Matten: How Much Extra Movement Do They Really Add?
Calling Unterseen or Matten “outside Interlaken” is not enough to judge the logistics. Both are part of the immediate travel area, and both are among the municipalities listed by Interlaken Tourism for the guest-card system.
What matters is whether the accommodation adds a movement you will repeat.
Unterseen: Read It From West First
For Unterseen, use Interlaken West as the first reference point rather than automatically measuring everything against Ost.
If your trip already favors West, an Unterseen address can preserve that western-side logic. If your itinerary is built around several BOB departures from Ost, the same address may add an extra local leg on multiple mornings.

Matten Has Its Own BOB Stop
Matten deserves separate treatment because it has its own Bernese Oberland Railway stop.
Jungfrau Railways lists year-round public transport at Matten b. Interlaken on the R61 Interlaken Ost–Grindelwald route and the R62 Interlaken Ost–Lauterbrunnen route. That can materially change the value of an accommodation near the stop.
Do not turn that fact into a blanket recommendation for Matten. A property somewhere else in the municipality may not benefit from the station in the same way. Check the actual address against Matten b. Interlaken station and your other daily movements.

Eligible overnight guests in Interlaken, Matten and Unterseen are among those who receive the guest card from their host. Interlaken Tourism states that the card includes free local public transport within its area of validity. Its digital version is called the Interlaken Pass.

That changes the cost side of choosing a less central address. A local ride covered by the card may not add another fare, but it still adds movement. Free transport can reduce the financial penalty of a location; it does not make two locations equally convenient.
